Value of a Practice Appraisal

While many doctors think a Practice Appraisal is only for those who are planning to sell their practice, the plain fact is that Practice Valuations serve a variety of important functions in your profession. For many doctors, their practice may be their most valuable asset and a critical component of their retirement planning.  Regardless of whether you are a new doctor or long-established professional, it is important for you to know the value of this investment.  Like your other investments, the value of your practice varies from one year to the next. Contact Wintersteen & Associates to determine the value of your practice when:

  • Planning your Retirement

  • Seeking to minimize stress and financial burdens upon your family in case of accident or death

  • Planning and reviewing insurance needs

  • Planning your Estate

  • Measuring your practice's growth and stability

  • Refinancing loans

  • Selling your entire practice ("Walk Away")

  • Recruiting an Associate with a "Buy In" Option

  • Forming partnership, group, or solo group

  • Dividing community assets (Divorce)

Wintersteen & Associates thoroughly analyses your practice, including financials, location, hard assets, patient charts, and goodwill. Several methods are employed to find the value of the entire practice. When finished, Wintersteen & Associates provides you with bound, written reports for your use in any of the above-mentioned activities.

  • After considering or making any suggested modifications, you receive an Appraisal Acceptance Form to sign and return.

  • You then receive two copies of the final bound Practice Appraisal, with additional copies available from Wintersteen & Associates.

Appraisal Considerations

While practices typically appraise for somewhere between 60-70 percent of collections from the previous year, individual practice characteristics may cause it to be appraised above 100%  or below 50%.  Some considerations involved in the practice appraisal include:

  • Business and Dental Equipment and condition

  • Fee schedule

  • History of goodwill

  • Managed Care or PPO Participation

  • Office Lease

  • Office location and condition

  • Practice profitability and growth pattern

  • Pending treatment in charts

  • Personnel
